Leaps & Bounds

New toy
Duncan got to go to K-Mart today to pick out a car for doing super well for his potty training. We were only going to get him a hot wheels or matchbox car but he saw this one and we figured he deserved it.

This was his reward and he let everyone know about it!

Potty Training

I know I haven’t posted here in awhile. To be honest, I haven’t had all that much to say but, I’d really like to post at least once a week or so. We’ll see if that actually happens.

For the past 5 days we have been working on potty training. He’s probably been ready for a lot longer than I have noticed but one night before bath he went in the little toilet in the bathroom and I applauded, the night after that he went again before bath and I said, that’s it, tomorrow you’re going to wear some big boy underpants.

Even though he already had some underpants we thought we would make it more special this time by going and buying him some Cars underpants. Target didn’t have any in his size so we got one pair of boxer briefs that were legit Cars and grossly overpriced as well as a pack of generic car underpants to wear. He spent two days in diapers after the first initial day because he wanted to although he still went pee in the toilet so I said, hey whatever you want as long as you pee in the toilet. His second day he had two accidents and since then he hasn’t had any where pee is concerned.

I think he’s doing fabulously and tonight we are wearing big boy underpants to bed to see how it goes. He’s been waking up dry for awhile and he does well for his naps in underpants so we shall see what the night holds for us.

26.5 Months Weaned

Well we’ve been on the road for over two weeks and I finally got some pictures uploaded, although we didn’t take many this go around. Next time (which we leave in about two hours) will hopefully prove to be a little bit better.

Duncan is now officially fully weaned and I have to say that it was really easy and I was really lucky for that. When we left the first night we had to drive about twelve hours so of course Duncan just slept in the car and didn’t nurse to sleep. Since we had been running on two hours of sleep the next night, I didn’t feel like messing around with his latching and unlatching games and just told him no nursing that night. He cried for a little bit but I think he was ready as well and he turned over and went to sleep. He’s asked every so often at night to nurse but I just tell him that mommy has nothing left for him and he’s a big boy anyway, he doesn’t need to nurse. Sometimes he whines a little other times he just giggles and turns over to go to sleep.

I was expecting a huge fight with him giving it up, especially since I did it while we were on the road but he’s been a real champ. I will say that he sleeps a lot better now and also, my body must have really been ready for the weaning because I didn’t engorge or anything afterwards which tells me I was hardly producing anything for him anyway.

Like I said, I was really lucky. I’ve read other women that get really sad when it’s time to wean or when their child weans themselves but I have to say that I’m not sad at all. I am quite happy that that chapter is over. I loved breastfeeding him but I was more ready than not to give it up. 26.5 months is more than over the goal of a 12 months that I gave myself of wanting to breastfeed for.

So, it’s official, he’s a big boy and growing up every day. I still get my hugs and kisses in though and he is finally hit over the 27 pounds mark so he’s gaining well!

Happy 2nd Birthday, Duncan!

Since we are in Australia this year for Duncan’s birthday, he gets to celebrate it a tad earlier than he would. It’s still on the same date (28th) but, it’s not the 28th in the United States much of the same time as Australia. Not that it matters, a date is a date, right?

So, my baby is now a two year old. We have survived two years of being parents and we have gone through a lot but at the same time it feels like it was nothing. Two years is a long time but it went by in the blink of an eye. Exhilarating and frightening all at the same time, don’t you think?

Duncan has taught me so much but I think this past year the main thing that he has taught both Jamie and I, is to trust in what he does. He knows what he wants, when he wants it and he will do things on his own time even though it’s a pain in the butt sometimes.

One of the major things that we went through with this last year was his feeding problems. That was a lot of fun to deal with and although early intervention is absolutely awesome and definitely has a place and is needed in most cases, Duncan didn’t need it. He had one session with the occupational therapist before we left for Australia and that was it. What he did need was time do drink and eat on his own time. Since Christmas Eve he has been eating like a normal kid. He is drinking exactly how much he should now and it’s like it never even happened. It is a huge relief to Jamie and I that he worked it out himself and he is gaining weight steadily and is over 25 pounds now. He’s a small guy but, I don’t think he was built to be a big boy, at least not yet.

He got to go super big bye bye as we called it at the beginning of the year. That trip was coming to Australia on a plane and meeting his Nana and Poppy as well as Aunts, Uncle, and cousins on his Dads side. It’s been a blast and we’ve done quite a bit of sight seeing as you can tell.

Duncan is talking up a storm and saying new words and phrases every day. Today it was “that’s not fair” when Jamie was taking cards off of him. His favorite food is spaghetti though he will take chocolate over anything at any time. He loves watching Cars and will watch that movie at least two times a day in bits and pieces. He has taken with grabbing baby dolls and loving them, putting them to his shoulder and giving them a pat. If he has an extra doll sometimes he will hand it over and make you pat the doll as well. Hugs and kisses are the thing to give out freely and when he wants to give a kiss he gives a smacking noise to get your attention.

Even through the feeding problems, the lack of drinking through any cups before 18 months old, weight gaining issues, and problems with the doctors, this year has been a blast. Duncan is definitely his own person and he has always been, his personality shines and every day he lives up to his Gaga’s nickname for him: Mr. Personality. He loves looking at pictures of the family and will point some of them out and laugh at his cousin Jeremy and Hunter when he sees pictures and videos of them.

Becoming parents was the best thing for Jamie and I, and we are quite happy with the easy going little boy we got. I couldn’t be happier with how he is turning out and he just makes life worth living.

Happy Birthday my crazy little man. Can’t wait to see what this year holds for you!

Had to flip him

I am not sure why but, ever since we’ve arrived in Australia Duncan has just done horribly at riding in cars. He tolerates it for about ten minutes and then that’s it, he’s done, he wants out and he lets everyone know it. So, Jamie and I decided to turn him forward facing to see if that would make it better. I’m sad to say that it did and so now we are forward facing him. I really didn’t want to for as long as we could but, I guess he told us that it was time.

We are happy that he is doing better in the car but also sad that it isn’t the safest thing for him. It is what it is, right? I think that he believes he doesn’t need to be in his car seat because while we were on the plane he didn’t need to be in one and got to be in our laps and to him, that was the best thing ever, moving and being out of the car seat.

So, mark another milestone off the list. We’re forward facing now!

Bubbles and Bye Bye

Sometimes Duncan will just take a huge leap and learn a bunch of stuff in one day. The other day we asked him if he wanted to go bye bye and he turned around and clear as day said bye bye back. It literally left everyone in the room with their jaw on the floor. Of course, he hasn’t said it since.

One word that he has said since that day and loves to say it is bubble. We’re trying to get it on video before he perfects it because it’s adorable. It’s more of a “bubumm” than bubble although it’s starting to turn into bubble more and more. Every time we get the video going he closes up and won’t say it the little turd.

He also has a love for mashed potatoes and any kind of red sauce. He’s still nowhere near where he should be eating wise but he is eating and will constantly try things to eat.

Sweet pickles is something he has grown fond of licking also. Go figure that one! It’s amazing the things that he does that you wouldn’t think he’d like. Just like the pickles, oh, and the salsa.

17 Months

Well, it is the end of September and with the end of each month marks another month older for Duncan. I know that 14, 15, 16, and 17 months aren’t huge milestones or anything but I don’t care!

17 months and one month until he is a year and a half old.

Everything strikes this guys fancy lately and especially big rigs if we are outside. There has been construction work going on around the neighborhood lately and every time a truck passes he has to stop and point at it while yelling. He is absolutely insane over them, it’s adorable.

He has taken to kicking and throwing his little inflatable soccer ball that his Gaga got him. That is a good inside activity for now because the weather is quickly changing to where we can’t go outside very often anymore. That upsets him because he is such an outside kid and sometimes if the front door is left open he makes a bee line for it.

He is eating a lot more also which is just fantastic. He has to have some of what anyone around him is eating or you’ll hear about it.

He’s got a few new words also such as cookie, baby, and Gaga and he will even put them together and say Gaga cookie every now and then. He is pronouncing kitty, dog, and stinky a lot better also.

Of course while we are out in public he is still saying hi to everyone and anyone that will listen to him. Something else that he loves doing is putting his hands over his ears when you are talking to him or when he’s running around. He’s also learned how to put his finger to his mouth and say “shh!”

He’s a funny little guy and a total blast!

Duncan is getting a passport

Today was a pretty big day for Duncan. We went in and filed for him to get a passport. Yep, in the sometime near future we are planning on traveling and he needs his passport for that. That up there is his picture for it. Can I just say that he is going to have the worlds cutest passport?

We were worried that they were going to have a problem with his photo because you are not supposed to smile at all in them but, he’s a baby and how are you supposed to get him not to smile? You point a camera at this kid and he’s grinning from ear to ear.

I suppose getting a passport could be considered a milestone, right?
